How We Can Help

Proactive care for your partnership

Couples counselling provides a safe, guided space to address what's not working, understand each other's perspectives, and develop new patterns of relating. Whether you're dealing with a specific issue or want to strengthen your bond, getting support early can make a real difference.

When conversations turn into arguments or you've stopped talking about things that matter, counselling can help you learn healthier ways to communicate.
Rebuilding trust after a betrayal is painful but possible. A counsellor can guide you both through the process of repair and reconnection.
When you feel more like roommates than partners, therapy can help you rediscover emotional and physical intimacy.
If you find yourselves having the same argument over and over, counselling can help you understand the underlying dynamics and break the cycle.
Whether you're considering separation or recommitting to your relationship, a counsellor can help you explore your options with clarity.

A Space for Both of You

Couples counselling works best when both partners feel heard. Your counsellor holds space for each perspective without taking sides, so you can move through difficult conversations together.

Tailored to Your Relationship

No two relationships are the same. Your counsellor will work with you to understand your specific patterns and challenges, and build an approach that fits how you relate to each other.

You're Not Alone

Investing in your relationship is investing in yourself

Relationship challenges can affect every aspect of your well-being—your mood, your sleep, your sense of self. When things feel difficult between you and your partner, it's easy to feel stuck or hopeless.

Couples counselling isn't about assigning blame. It's about creating a space where both partners can feel heard, understood, and supported. With the right guidance, many couples find that their relationship can become stronger than it was before.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about couples counselling at Women's Mental Health.

Ideally, yes. Couples counselling is most effective when both partners are present and engaged. However, there may be times when individual sessions are recommended as part of the process. Your counsellor will work with you to determine the best approach.

It's common for one partner to be more hesitant about counselling. If your partner isn't ready, individual therapy can still help you work on your side of the relationship and develop strategies for communication and connection. Sometimes this can be a stepping stone to couples work.

The length of therapy varies depending on the issues you're working through and your goals. Some couples see meaningful progress in 8 to 12 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. Your counsellor will check in regularly to ensure the process is working for both of you.

Not at all. Couples counselling is for any two people in a committed relationship, whether you're dating, common-law, engaged, or married. We also support LGBTQ2S+ relationships and work with couples at any stage of their partnership.

The first session is an opportunity for your counsellor to get to know you both, understand your relationship history, and learn about the challenges you're facing. There will be some intake paperwork, a discussion about the counselling process, and space for you to ask questions. Many couples find it helpful to hear a neutral perspective from the very first meeting.
