How we can help

Counselling for Neurodivergent Women

Living in a world designed primarily for neurotypical ways of thinking and being can often feel exhausting and overwhelming. Many people, particularly women, spend years masking their traits in order to fit in, which can lead to burnout, anxiety, and self-doubt over time. Counselling can help you better understand your unique brain, gently reduce the pressure of masking where it no longer serves you, and build a life that feels more sustainable and aligned with your needs.

  • Understand and reduce the impact of masking
  • Process the experience of late diagnosis or self-discovery
  • Build practical systems and supports that work for your brain

Understanding Neurodivergence

For many women, neurodivergent traits such as ADHD or autism may have been misunderstood, missed, or mislabelled over time. You might have been described as anxious, overly sensitive, disorganised, or simply felt like you were not meeting expectations no matter how hard you tried. Over time, this can lead to self-doubt, exhaustion, and a sense of constantly falling short.

For some, a later-in-life diagnosis or a growing self-recognition of neurodivergent traits can bring a sense of relief and clarity, while for others it may be an ongoing process of understanding their experiences more deeply. This can also bring grief for the support, language, or accommodations that may have been missing along the way. Therapy offers space to explore these experiences, make sense of your story, and reconnect with your strengths, needs, and identity in a more compassionate way.

Types of neurodivergent experiences

Neurodiversity includes a wide range of ways of thinking, feeling, and processing the world. We provide affirming support for different neurodivergent experiences, helping you better understand yourself and develop strategies that fit your unique needs.

ADHD often presents differently in women and can show up as internal restlessness rather than outward hyperactivity. You might experience chronic overwhelm, sensitivity to rejection, and executive functioning challenges that make everyday tasks feel difficult to manage. Many women are not diagnosed until adulthood, often after years of feeling like they are struggling without clear answers.

Autism in women is often under-recognised, in part due to strong masking and adaptation skills developed over time. You may experience sensory sensitivities, social exhaustion, and a strong need for routine or predictability. Therapy can support you in understanding these experiences, reducing the strain of masking, and exploring a greater sense of authenticity and self-acceptance.

It is common for ADHD and autism to occur together, or for individuals to relate to traits of both. This combination can sometimes feel like a pull between different needs. For example, a desire for routine alongside a drive for novelty or change. Therapy can help you understand these overlapping experiences, reduce internal conflict, and find more balance and ease in how you navigate daily life.

Receiving a diagnosis in adulthood can bring both clarity and a need to reframe your past through a new understanding of yourself. This process can bring a mix of emotions, including grief, anger, and relief as you begin to make sense of your experiences in a different way. Therapy offers support as you navigate this shift, helping you integrate this understanding and move forward with greater self-compassion.

Why neurodivergent women have been overlooked

Neurodivergent women have often been overlooked in research and diagnosis, with early understandings of ADHD and autism largely based on how these traits present in boys. As a result, many women grew up feeling misunderstood, “different,” or as though they were not meeting expectations without knowing why. We are committed to helping shift this narrative toward one of understanding, validation, and support.

Our practice is a neurodiversity-affirming space. We recognise and respect different ways of thinking, feeling, and processing the world, and we work with you to support your needs rather than change who you are. You deserve therapy that honours your experience and helps you build a life that feels sustainable and aligned with you.

Frequently asked questions

What’s on your mind?

Everything you need to know about our counselling services.

Not at all. You do not need a formal diagnosis to access support. We understand that assessments can be costly and difficult to access, and many people come to therapy while exploring or identifying with neurodivergent traits. Our counsellors are here to support you in understanding your experiences and navigating your needs, wherever you are in that process.

Many traditional therapy approaches are designed with neurotypical ways of thinking and functioning in mind, which may not always reflect your lived experience. As a result, generic strategies like “just use a planner” or “try to be more organised” can feel unhelpful or unrealistic for neurodivergent needs. We offer neurodiversity-affirming care that recognises and validates your unique ways of processing the world. Therapy is adapted to support your sensory needs, communication style, and thinking patterns, with strategies that are practical, flexible, and tailored to how your brain works.

Yes. We work with you to better understand your sensory triggers and how they show up in your daily life. Together, we develop practical strategies to support regulation and reduce overwhelm, as well as ways to communicate and advocate for your needs in work, home, and other environments.

This is a very common concern, especially for many neurodivergent women who have spent years adapting to fit in. Unmasking is not something that happens all at once, but a gradual and gentle process of reconnecting with yourself. In therapy, we start by exploring your preferences, interests, and natural ways of being in a supportive and safe space. Over time, this helps you rebuild trust in yourself and develop a stronger sense of identity that feels authentic and sustainable.

It’s important to work with a therapist who understands how ADHD, autism, and other neurodivergent experiences can present differently, particularly in women and those who have learned to mask.
